OUR HISTORY

God has been faithful to Wildwood Community Church, and we want to give glory to God by retelling the story of His faithfulness over the past 50 years.

Wildwood was officially incorporated as a church in 1968 after having begun as a Bible study with OU college students in 1966.

Throughout the last 56 years, Wildwood has met in multiple locations, including two different home garages, the parlor of McFarlin Methodist Church, the Seventh Day Adventist Church facility, the building currently owned by Northeast Baptist Church (a facility Wildwood built in 1976), and our current facility – the former Redlands Racquetball Club — which Wildwood purchased and moved into in 1986.

God has blessed us with amazingly consistent and faithful leadership over the past five plus decades. Following church planter Dick Gerbrandt, there have been only three full-time senior pastors: Lyle Cunningham (1974-78), Bruce A. Hess (1979-2016), and Mark Robinson (2016 – present). Additionally, our current staff team represents 539 years of cumulative experience at Wildwood (as an attender + their time on staff), and our current lay Elder Team members have been at Wildwood for a combined 253 years. This stability is a tremendous gift from the Lord.

On top of having consistent leadership, the strategic location of our current facility allows us to impact the city of Norman, Tinker Air Force Base, and the University of Oklahoma, in addition to our partnerships with ministries on five continents.

From our origin as a small Bible study that met in a garage to a growing church body of over 2,000, we continue to value close community, in-depth Bible study, and an authentic relationship with God through our Savior Jesus Christ. It is our desire to glorify God by shining as Christ’s light in our homes, our community, and the world.

Wildwood Church Timeline

Wildwood Church Gathering Hall rendering

Throughout this journey, God used particular generations of church members to invest in facility expansion so that the next generation of the church would have adequate space to go deep and wide with Jesus. Our current situation is an opportunity for today’s Wildwood members to invest generously financially so that the facility can be expanded once again, allowing us to continue to invite our community to follow Jesus with us for the glory of God in the days ahead.
